River retreat is a self catering cottage in the village of Kapitanovtsi just 10 minutes drive to the historical city of Vidin in the north of Bulgaria. The cottage can sleep up to four people in two bedrooms and has a fully fitted kitchen, lounge, entrance conservatory area, shower room and a large terrace area for dining with views to the countryside and mountains.
The village is only 10 minutes drive to the newly constructed bridge into Romania and the same distance to the river Danube. The garden has fruit trees and organically grown fruit and vegetables. A pretty flower garden and growing area. In a peaceful location but very close to many historical sites. The cottage has a wood burning stove and is centrally heated. Bath towels and bedding are supplied and also transfers from Sofia airport are available.
The area boasts many cultural and historical sites as well as walking, bird watching, cycling and tours of the area. Romania can be explored both by car and a local ferry service from Vidin.
There are river tours available from Vidin which is set on the river Danube and a perfect place for fishing and swimming with small beaches. The Danube is very beautiful and attracts painters and artists.
A river restaurant boat can be found on the banks of the river. Very close to this area are museums and parks and the University of Vidin.
The Baba Vida Fortress was built upon the foundations of the ancient fortress of Bononia upon the ruins of an ancient Thracian settlement in the early 1 century AD. The castle is situated right on the banks of the river Danube and has a 9.5 acre surrounding area. The castle has a nearly square shape with its four corners pointing out at the four geographical directions.
Belogradchik with its very unusual rock formations and fortress is one of the most attractive national tourism sites of Bulgaria.
It is picturesquely spread over the western part of the Stara Planina Mountain at 545m above sea level.
Used as a mansion by the Vidin Tzar Ivan Sratzmir during the X111 century.
Today its an historical monument which can be easily reached from Vidin.
The Baba Vida Castle is a musical venue in the Summer with its open air stage for ballet dancers, singer,musicians and folklore dancers.
Close to the castle is the open air water centre where all manner of water sports can be enjoyed as well as organised tours along the Danube.
It is considered that a Thracian village existed in the region from the 3rd century BC. It was called Dunonia and was further developed by the Romans and built into the Bononia Fortress
Today it can be visited as an historical museum set right on the banks of the Danube and very close to the town of Vidin
